Neeraj Chopra Career

Neeraj Chopra has javelin throw as his profession since 2011 when he decided to start throwing the javelin after watching films of Jan Zelezny, a great Czech thrower. He received his first ever international medal in the 2016 South Asian Games, wherein he set a new national record by throwing the ball 82.23 meters. Then, he bagged the championship title of the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships and broke the world junior record with an incredible throw of 86.48 meters. He was also able to participate in the 2016 Rio Olympics but did not reach the finals.

He became the first Indian to win a gold medal in javelin throw at the Asian Athletics Championships in 2017. Moreover, he won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast in Australia in April 2018 with a new national record throw of 86.47m . He then aged 20 years managed to win another medal, an Asian record throw of 88.06m at the Asian Games held in Indonesia in 2018.

After the Asian championships in 2019, Neeraj underwent elbow surgery and did not participate in any activities until the end of that year. Nevertheless, he returned in 2020, marring qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics with a throw distance of 87.86 m in South Africa. At the scant Tokyo Olympics, he became an Olympic champion with a throw distance of 87.5 m.
