He had a younger brother, Frank Oppenheimer, who also became a physicist. In 1940, he married Katherine “Kitty” a former communist and divorcee. They had two children, Peter and Katherine.

Education/Professions

Oppenheimer had always been interested in the sciences and mathematics, interests that were encouraged by his parents. His higher education would eventually lead him to Harvard University where he earned a degree in chemistry in 1925. He then moved to England to study physics at Cambridge and later to the University of Göttingen for his Ph.D, which he was awarded in 1927. He became a faculty member of the physics department at the University of California, Berkeley, and later taught at the California Institute of Technology. He actively participated in theoretical research, especially in quantum mechanics and nuclear physics. He gained notoriety as the head of the scientific research for the atomic bomb under the auspices of the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II. Due to his scientific and organizational inputs, some people regard him as the “father of the atomic bomb.”

Why he is famous?

Robert J Oppenheimer was known as an American physicist earlier on in life as well as was recognized later in life as the: ‘father of the atomic bomb.’ He was a key figure in the Manhattan Project – the first nuclear arms project undertaken during World War II and managed the laboratory that engineered and constructed the first nuclear weapons. Later on, with what he participated in, he didn’t scold himself that much, and all the while, he became an active supporter of nuclear arms.

Some interesting facts about Oppenheimer

  • He was a brilliant intellectual, having graduated from Harvard University in 1925 and obtained his doctorate in 1927 from the University of Gottingen, Germany. He was recognized as a significant figure in quantum mechanics, nuclear physics, and thermodynamics.
  • At the age of fifteen, he was the youngest Professional Member of the New York Mineralogical Society, who all have a fervor for rocks and minerals ever since he was a little kid.
  • On three occasions – 1945, 1951, and 1967 – he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physics, but he was never awarded. It was natural that one foolishly thought about the prize and was completely absorbed by its contemplation.
  • Simultaneously, he was a womanizer who bested most of his colleagues – among many affairs were his students and fellow scholars.
  • When, in 1945 during the first atomic bomb test in New Mexico, he said: “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds”, he was quoting the Hindu Bhagavad Gita.
