Neeraj Chopra started his career as a javelin thrower in 2011, when he was inspired by watching videos of Jan Zelezny, a Czech legend in the sport. He won his first international medal at the 2016 South Asian Games, where he broke the national record with a throw of 82.23 m. He then won the gold medal at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships, setting a world junior record of 86.48 m. He also qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics but failed to make the final.
In 2017, he won the gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships, becoming the first Indian to do so in the javelin throw. He also won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2018, setting a new national record of 86.47 m. He then won another gold medal at the Asian Games in 2018 with a throw of 88.06 m, which was also an Asian record.
In 2019, he underwent an elbow surgery that kept him out of action for most of the year.
